End of Life (EOL) HP LTO-1 and HP LTO-2 Ultrium Data Cartridge Products
HP is announcing that the following LTO-1 and LTO-2 Ultrium products will reach end of sale between October 15th 2016 and March 31st 2017.
These SKUs were first launched in 2000 and 2002 for LTO-1 and LTO-2 respectively.
To date, HPE has shipped 1.9 billion GB of capacity of LTO-1 media and 7.4 billion GB of capacity of LTO-2 media!
Thanks to the innovation of the LTO Ultrium format, the most recent LTO-7 cartridge can store 15 TB of data on a tape identical in size and appearance to the earliest LTO-1 cartridges. Although demand for newer Ultrium formats remains very solid, sales of the oldest generations of LTO products have reached the point where their manufacture is no longer viable.

Customers can migrate to new LTO Technology, by taking advantage of the
Ultrium's format's read/write backwards compatiblity. LTO-1 cartridges can be read by LTO-3 drives, whilst LTO-2 cartridges can be read by both LTO-3 and LTO-4 drives, and be written to by LTO-3 devices.
Later generations of the LTO Ultrium format offer increased
capacity, performance and innovative features such as support for WORM and
Linear Tape File System (LTFS).
Another good option for SMB's if you were using a single LTO
tape drive, consider upgrading to RDX as a replacement solution. Removable Disk
Storage (RDX) is fast, has capacity up to 4TB and uses USB 3.0 for connectivity.
It's rugged, reliable and with RDX media now capable of backing up 4TB on a
single disk cartridge, you have plenty of options. Note: LTO-2 only had a
native capacity of 200GB, 400GB with compression. With RDX media, you have
options of 500GB RDX, 1TB RDX, 2TB RDX, 3TB RDX and now 4TB RDX. In
addition unlike LTO, one RDX docking station can read/write to all sizes of RDX
media.
