The ONLY USB tape drive worth owning

I recently got the LT70H model of this drive, primarily because my systems run on Windows 7 which LTO8 doesn't support. This tape drive is simply awesome!!! I use mine to back up a modest 30TB home media server. A single LTO6 tape will comfortably hold 500 DVD movies while a LTO7 tape will fit maybe 250 Blu ray rips. The tapes themselves aren't that expensive ($26/$64) and are a better deal than LTO8 tape, RDX cartridges and even BDXL M-Disc.
Of course you pay a lot for the LTO drive, but they are built solid and depending on how often you use them will outlast multiple PC's. It's nice that this can also be used with a laptop, and if you have a small inverter/battery it can even be made portable. A pelican case would work great here.
Formatted capacity is 2.15TB/5.25TB for LTO6/LTO7. I use the included LTFS software for drag and drop, so I don't know how compression plays into it or how your backup software will handle things.
As for the tapes, be wary of sketchy sources online that sell repackaged/certified stock that may actually be damaged and unusable. I chose Quantum brand from here. BackupWorks are a certified partner so Quantum will honor their warranty if a tape does eventually fail. These tapes have a 30 year archive life. I will be picking up a LTO Turtle case in the very near future.
I have been called crazy for not just buying 2.5 inch portable external drives for backup. As cheap as those may be, your data is gone if they ever get dropped or mishandled. SSD's also don't help given that NAND can lose it's data if left powered off beyond 12 months. M-Disc is excruciatingly slow to burn and requires frequent swapping so cannot be done unattended for large backup jobs, never mind the $30 coasters when a burn fails. Even a RDX drive will eventually die as the bearings inside begin drying up. NAS hardware can also die unexpectedly, even if the drives in it are healthy.
Two thumbs up to Unitex. You have another happy customer.
