The Wobbly Future of the Hard Disk Drive Industry
Disk drives face not only the SSD, but other more disruptive long-term options
rising up from the depths like that shark Meg from the Marianas Trench.
They include seemingly obsolete storage technologies like optical discs or
magnetic tape. Yes, magnetic tape. The OG storage medium that pre-dates even the computer itself.
Magnetic tape remains cheap,
reliable, offline and energy efficient (Fast Forward to 17:15 on the
Video).
And thanks to R&D imported from the hard disk drive industry, it too has vastly
expanded its storage capacity. Some of these tape cartridges can store some 20 terabytes.
There is a great article in IEEE Spectrum about this technology.
