What is a Bridge? - Adding a Bridge to your Ethernet Network
Convert from SAS to Ethernet
Network storage is either limited, slow, or expensive. SAS/SATA direct-attached storage is excellent value but can't natively scale and is usually shared through a server.
ATTO XstreamCORE busts this model! Scale SAS/SATA storage and share it on a network.
what is a bridge? Adding a bridge to your
ethernet
Network. Hi Nicole Hi Ashley. I was hoping
you could help explain how a bridge fits
into a
network. Of
course, for the purposes of this video we
will be talking about an Ethernet
Network. In an Ethernet Network you would
have a switch that connects all of your
systems together, one dedicated system on
your network with an HBA would have a
direct attached storage like a Tape
Library that only that system could
utilize. Now if you were to add a bridge
to this network you could connect the
tape Library directly to your switch
allowing all of your systems on the
network to utilize the storage or tape
Library. Oh so it's kind of like a
switch? Not quite, a switch is a device
that directs Network traffic and tells
it where to go on the network. A bridge
converts data from one protocol to
another in this case from SAS to
ethernet. That makes sense but what are
the benefits of an ATTO Bridge across my
network? Adding a bridge to your network
allows any of your systems to utilize
the Tape Library instead of just one. In
doing this it frees up the system to be
used on your network instead of being a
dedicated backup device not to mention a
bridge also consumes significantly less
power than a server saving you money. Wow
I see a bridge can actually add a lot of
flexibility by allowing systems to share
tape
resources. It does, it is important to keep in mind that while systems can
utilize the tape library now, only one
system can access it at a tim. This is a
physical limitation to block storage
itself just like if you and me were to
share a pen you would first use the pen
then when you're done you would give it
to me to use and so on and so forth I
didn't realize how much adding a bridge
to my network could do so much I really
need to get my hands on one of these
thanks.
