Why should I License Active Vault with my Quantum Scalar i3 Tape Library
Keep a totally secure air-gapped copy of data
within the library itself.
We keep getting questions about Active Vault from our
Quantum Scalar i3 Tape Library customers so here's some quick pointers why you
should license Active-Vault.
- The Basic - Administrator moves tapes to a
secure, isolated in-library Active Vault partition not visible to any
application or network
- Air-Gap - The key to thwarting ransomware is
maintaining a copy of data that is completely inaccessible from any network
- The most cost effective and secure way to hold data
offline is magnetic tape
- A tape cartridge on a shelf is completely immune to
ransomware
- Traditionally, offline meant physically exporting,
having an operator carry them to a shelf or container in a secure location
(hence human error - misfiled, lost, damaged)
- Via a library managed partition - make use of
unlicensed slots invisible to external applications
- An Active Vault partition provides a secure storage
location within the library that is not accessible to applications, even
accidentally
- Configured by the Administrator AV partitions may
not be exposed externally to applications, the library software simply won't
allow it
- Operators cannot accidentally put vaulted tapes
online
- AV partitions also contain no tape drives
- Because vaulted tapes remain in library, they are
safe from mishandling, damage or loss
- Only administrator may create, modify, delete or
reconfigure AV partitions
- Operators have "user" privileges only, which may be
restricted to specific partitions when a library is shared by multiple
applications.
- Scalar libraries may be integrated with Microsoft
Active Directory or other LDAP directory services
- Active vault is also compatible with other security
features such as tape encryption, WORM media and media security
