30% Y/Y Growth in 2Q12 for WW Backup Appliance Market
Worldwide Purpose-Built Backup
Appliance (PBBA) factory revenues posted year-over-year growth of 29.8%,
totaling just under $657.4 million in 2Q12.
For the quarter, the total PBBA open
systems market posted just under $551.1 million in revenues, representing 27.7%
growth from the prior year's second quarter. The total worldwide PBBA capacity
shipped reach 273,082TB, growing 32.2% year over year.
The worldwide PBBA market grew robustly
in the second quarter of 2012 with factory revenues exceeding $657 million,
the customer adoption of PBBA systems has intensified as customers use these
systems to improve their backup windows and recovery time objectives.

Results
EMC maintained
its lead in the overall PBBA market with 62.2% revenue share in the second
quarter, followed by IBM and Symantec with 13.5% and 7.9% market share,
respectively. IBM had a good quarter with its mainframe PBBA offerings. Symantec
exhibited strong growth in the open system PBBA market with its NetBackup
appliances, which entered the PBBA market in 2010. Meanwhile, HP captured 5.9%
share with its new PBBA product offerings coupled with its StorOnce
deduplication and optimization software tools.
